Essays for the Truth Seeker
Healing from Childhood Trauma

BOOKS

Book #1      TOWARD TRUTH:  A Psychological Guide to Enlightenment

I wrote and self-published (through Xlibris) “Toward Truth” to offer the reader a radical psychological guide to recognizing and healing childhood trauma—both the extreme echelon of damage that the world recognizes as trauma and the other 99% that flies below the radar and is considered normal.   This book, however, is not a guide in the conventional “how-to” sense, rather, a guide in terms of stating clearly the psychological connections for healing that our world so often and so comfortably denies.  My purpose in this book is to side with the truth of the child, not the lies of the parents, and to trace the roots of trauma to the family. I strive to take the groundbreaking work of psychologist Alice Miller to the next level, and in so doing offer a vision of deep, permanent, non-dissociative hope.

Book #2      A WAY OUT OF MADNESS: Dealing With Your Family After You've Been Diagnosed with a Psychiatric Disorder

Published in 2010 by the International Society for the Psychological Study of the Schizophrenias and other Psychoses; 158 pages

I co-wrote and co-edited this book with a colleague, Matthew Morrissey, a licensed family therapist in San Francisco.  Together we wrote the first half the book, to offer guidance in resolving family conflict for people who have been labeled with psychiatric disorders (such as schizophrenia, bipolar, major depression, etc.).  The second half of the book is comprised of personal accounts of healing by a variety of people who were themselves psychiatrically diagnosed.  Almost all have come off their psychiatric medication, and tell how and why they did it.

"Everyone touched by mental illness should have a copy of this slim but extraordinarily powerful guide; there's nothing else like it.  This book will change lives."

--Gail Hornstein, PhD, author of "Agnes's Jacket: A Psychologist's Search for the Meanings of Madness"

Book #3     FROM TRAUMA TO ENLIGHTENMENT: Self-Therapy in Twelve Steps

My colleague Frederick Timm and I wrote and self-published (April, 2009) a 44-page booklet on doing self-therapy.  It very much follows the philosophy of this website, yet offers much more practical guidance.

We have condensed and distilled our philosophy into twelve sequential steps.  Each step has its own chapter, followed by a series of step-specific tools and questions for enhancing your self-therapy experience  Also included are ten general tools for doing self-therapy and a list of 30 self-therapy slogans---and an explication of each.

Happy inner traveling!

Book #4      BEYOND MEDICATION: Therapeutic Engagement and the Recovery from Psychosis

I am the co-editor, along with David Garfield, M.D., of this volume, published Fall, 2008 by Routledge in the United Kingdom.  I also have a chapter in the book: "Doing the Impossible Work in Impossible Places."  The book is oriented primarily, though not solely, for therapists and other clinicians who wish to work psychodynamically - and without medication - with people diagnosed with psychotic disorders.

"This superbly executed work is as courageous as it is timely. At last psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy is being recommended and justified for the treatment of psychotic patients – over and above – and often instead of – psychopharmacology! This work is recommended for all mental health workers but particularly for psychiatric residents and psychologists in training."
